Biebrza National Park

Biebrza National Park opening of the park took place on September 9, 1993, and a couple of years later the world community recognized the colossal value of the Biebrza marshes. In spring and autumn, they become impassable, but in summer they are quite suitable for observing the numerous birds that nest here, attracted by the abundance of insects. Who’s not here! Ornithologists working in Bebrzhansky National Park talk about 270 species of birds that can be seen here in the summer. These are, first of all, waterfowl: terns, curlews, marsh harriers and others. Most of them do not leave the blessed swamps, only 113 species of birds are migratory.

Biebrza National Park protects vast and almost unchanging valley peatlands with a unique variety of plants, birds, other animal species and natural ecosystems. The Biebrza Valley is a very important nesting, feeding and resting place for a variety of birds of wetlands. In 1995, it was included in the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Especially, as a habitat for the birds of these lands. The total area of the protected area, including a small fragment of the Sokol Hills, is 59,223 hectares.

Biebrza Park Activities

The park’s most valuable asset is the wide valley of the winding Bebrzy River, of natural origin, with Poland’s largest complex of peatlands, called the Biebrza Marshes. Rare and endangered species of plants, birds and other animals have been preserved in this place. Biebrza National Park is also characterized by extensive landscapes, ecosystems and habitats that have been irretrievably damaged elsewhere by the drainage of swamps and peatlands.

The park can be divided into three parts:

  • The North Basin is the smallest and least visited area of the park.
  • The middle basin is characterized by a combination of humid forests and swamps.
  • The southern basin is where most of the territory is occupied by swamps and peatlands.

A prime example is the Red Swamp (Czerwone Bagno), which includes a moist alder forest that is home to about 400 moose. The fauna is rich and diverse, represented by mammals such as wolves, wild boars, foxes, roe deer, otters and beavers. However, the moose is considered the king of the park. About half of the country’s elk population (600 individuals) live within the boundaries of the park. Bird watchers flock to Biebrza to see about 270 species of birds, more than half of all species recorded in Poland.

Permanent exhibitions

Biebrza National Park organized two permanent exhibitions located at its headquarters. The educational centre and administration of the park is located at Osowiec-Twierdza 8, 19–110, Podlaskie Voivodeship.

Opening hours of exhibitions:

  • In season, from April 20 to September 10, daily: from 08.00 to 17.00.
  • Out of season, from September 11 to April 19, monday to Friday: from 07:30 to 15:30.

Main exhibition

Crossing the threshold of the exhibition hall, guests will move into the mysterious world of wetlands. A visit to the exhibition begins with an invitation to the guide to go to the wooden bridge. Exactly the same are located on the territory of the swamps of the Biebrza National Park. In the center of the platform is a screen that demonstrates a series of multimedia shows. Visitors will see films demonstrating the dynamics of changes in the landscape of the Biebrza Valley during the year, the variability of its flora and fauna, the peculiarities of the life of the inhabitants on the reservoir. The video sequence is accompanied by a spatial soundtrack, creating the illusion that the guests are in a real swamp.

At the exhibition you can see a variety of samples of stuffed animals and showcases with smaller representatives of the fauna, exhibited in glass cabinets. Entrance to the exhibition is free, but at the same time it can be visited by no more than 25 people. The exhibition hall is the perfect solution for exploring the national park during bad weather.

Birds of the Biebrza Marshes

The exhibition presents more than sixty exhibits in the form of wooden birds – exact copies of those living in the Biebrza National Park. These sculptures were created by the local sculptor Bogdan Tushinsky from the village of Dziwiąje, located near Monek. The birds are carved in their true size and painted in a way that is very similar to the real ones.
