Payment for travel with Urbana card

There are no tickets for travel on public transport in Ljubljana in the classical sense. For these purposes, the Urbana map is used.

The Urbana card is a contactless card for non-cash payment of travel on all bus routes and on the funicular to Ljubljana Castle, Eurban cars, as well as for paying for parking in the white zone. With the Urbana card, you can make a free transfer within 90 minutes within the selected tariff zones. When traveling around the city, you will remain in zone 1. When boarding a vehicle, it will be enough to attach the card to the green reader, and the corresponding amount will be debited from it. Several passengers can travel on one card – in this case, you will need to go to the driver and tell him how many people are traveling with you so that he can enter the necessary data into the system.

Urbana card may be personalized and non-personalized. Tourists should use a yellow, non-personalized card that can be handed over to another person after your departure. The card can be purchased at the following places: in green stand-alone vending machines (Urbanomat) near bus stops, in the public transport information center (LPP) at Slovenska cesta 56, at the Ljubljana bus station, in large shopping centers – Mercator and Spar. In Urbanomat, you can check the balance of the card and top up it. The cost of an “empty” card without travel is € 2. You can put up to € 50 on the card.

Travel for children under 6 years old accompanied by an adult is free. There is no charge for strollers, suitcases or dogs. If you travel without a ticket, you face a fine of € 40.

Bus station (Ljubljana public transport)

The bus station in Ljubljana is located at Trg Osvobodilne fronte 4, 1000 Ljubljana (the city bus stop Ljubljana AP (Avtobusna Postaja). This is where the bus from Ljubljana airport arrives.

Intercity, suburban and international buses leave from the bus station. The most popular international bus routes are to Belgrade (Serbia) and Trieste (Italy). Check the route schedule on the websites of the carriers Alpetour and Flixbus. Bus tickets sell out quickly during the summer season, so it’s best to take care of yourself and buy your ticket online in advance. Tickets purchased online will be asked to print at the station. You can buy tickets at the ticket office at the bus station only for cash.

International buses will also take you to the following cities in Europe and the Balkans: Zagreb, Klagenfurt, Graz, Venice, etc. The cost of a bus ticket is from € 7 one way, depending on the direction. When moving from Slovenia to Croatia, allow for extra border crossing time. When traveling from Slovenia to Austria or Italy, there is no border.

Railway station (Ljubljana public transport)

Slovenia has a regular railway connection with other cities of the country and Europe. There are 6 passenger stations within Ljubljana. The main railway station of Ljubljana is located next to the bus station, within walking distance from the historic center of Ljubljana. The exact address of the station is Trg Osvobodilne fronte 6.

The railway station is very convenient: it provides a cafe, luggage storage, car rental and a waiting area. From the local railway station you can go to the largest cities in Europe: Trieste, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, etc. The cost of a train ticket on the domestic route is from € 6 one way, on the international – from € 15 one way.

Trains connect Ljubljana with the resort and sea cities of the country – Rogaška Slatina, Lake Bled, Koper. Typically, trains run where the bus does not go. If you need to get to a place where neither trains nor buses go, the only option is a taxi transfer or car rental.

Car rental in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is well positioned for road travel in Europe. Italy, Croatia, Austria are located next to it. Renting a car is convenient when traveling with a group of friends – this way you will save on travel expenses on intercity buses or trains. If you are interested in the coast of Slovenia or the ski resorts of the country, it is most convenient to reach them with a rented car.

You can compare the cost of the car rental and book a car on the Rentalcars website. Since 2019 alone, all companies rent cars with a credit card and an international driver’s license, and also take high deposits (deposits). When renting, you will be given a car already with a vignette for driving on the roads of Slovenia, there will be no additional payments for travel on the roads. With early booking, you can rent a car at a price of € 25 per day. Traffic rules in Slovenia do not differ from European ones.
